Your skin naturally produces hyaluronic acid, a sugar-based compound responsible for delivering and maintaining moisture and nutrient levels in skin cells, and which creates the appearance of volume and smoothness in young, supple skin. Unfortunately, with the progression of time, your skin’s ability to manufacture its own hyaluronic acid diminishes. HA is a smooth gel that is made of cross-linked hyaluronic acid particles. When injected into fine lines, wrinkles, furrows, or sunken areas of the face, the filler replenishes the hyaluronic acid that has been absorbed into your body over time, helping you achieve a more youthful appearance. Facial filler treatment entails a series of injections under the skin’s surface – at various subdermal-dermal levels, depending on the filler. Thicker fillers are used for lifting and are administered deeper, while thinner fillers are administered more superficially to smooth away finer lines. The amount needed depends on the depth and size of the wrinkle or loss of volume. Often a combination of several types of fillers produce the best results, as they are able to correct multiple problem areas, resulting in more natural results.

There is no right age to start treatment, depending on your facial anatomy, and if you start seeing lines and sagging on your face, then you may consider this treatment to avoid those lines getting deeper and more prominent. The best way to know is to schedule a consultation with a doctor and go over the areas of the face that bother you, at which point the doctor can determine whether fillers are the solution to address your concerns, or may recommend other options, or a combination of treatments.

Adults, men and women, 21 – 65 years of age are candidates for the treatment, considering they don’t have any of the contraindications, which will be discussed with the doctor at the consultation.

The average length of filler injections is about 10 to 20, depending on the individual and the amount of areas being treated. However, there is 10 to 15 minutes prep time, where photos will be taken for result comparison, and consent form will be signed. Also, most of the time, patients/doctors prefer to apply a topical anesthetic cream to the injection site, to ease the pain. Although not necessary, since fillers we use contain lidocaine which will begin numbing the area as soon as injections begin. Topical cream is mainly for comforting the patient, and takes 15-30 minutes to take effect.

Most individuals will notice results immediately, although due to minor swelling upon injections, the actual result will be seen after 2 weeks (or when the swelling subdues). If you are not satisfied with the result after 2 weeks, you should schedule an appointment for an evaluation. At that point the doctor can help you decide whether more filler is needed, or recommend additional treatments.

Some patients report that being injected with fillers feels like a pinch or minor discomfort. If you are concerned about discomfort, your provider may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment, however, this is not always required since all our HA fillers contain lidocaine, making it more comfortable to endure the treatment.

Dermal filler injections require very minimal downtime, allowing patients to return to work and their normal activities directly following treatment.

After your treatment, you might experience swelling, redness, bruising, and tenderness in the area injected. Bruising may last a few days or more. A topical arnica cream may be suggested, along with cover-up make up. (Bruising depends on many factors, including your lifestyle and medications, as well as doctor’s technique. It is always recommended to avoid any blood thinners, including Aspirin, Vitamin K, and Alcohol. Doctor may recommend taking Arnica prior to injections. At times, there is a chance that a less visible vessel may be in the injected site, and may be hard to avoid.)

In general, the results from HA injectable fillers are temporary; commonly lasting from few months to two years. This depends on the type fillers used. For optimal results, additional treatment sessions are encouraged.
